The runners among you will know what I'm talking about ... The so called
“runner's high” is already a
great feeling on concrete and asphalt. But imagine, you experience it in the midst of
untouched nature, in
unique locations and with
unforgettable views of the sea and over
breathtaking landscapes - in Croatia while you are on vacation.
Two special marathons take place in
Dalmatia. And if you happen to be in the right place at the right time - in one of
our villas in Dalmatia - you should definitely
take part as a runner.
Every year the
“Wings For Life World Run” takes place worldwide.
Zadar is the event location in Croatia, because with its central location on the
Dalmatian coast it is the ideal starting point and easily accessible for every runner in Croatia. The motto of the run is “
Running for those who can‘t”, because 100% of the entry money goes into
spinal cord research, which helps to cure paraplegia. Those who don't run themselves are welcome to donate and cheer on, because the participating runners and wheelchair users really deserve support.
The competition takes place
around the world at the same time. There is no time limit, but about 30 minutes after the starting shot a so-called
“catcher car” starts and gradually overtakes the participants. As soon as you are overtaken by the car, your time will be stopped, but you are welcome to
continue running if you can. :)
As you run,
experience the coastline from
Zadar to Sibenik up close. The view of the turquoise Adriatic Sea, the untouched nature and vast fields
makes up for all the hardships. You run through small fishing villages like Sv. Filip i Jakov and through popular tourist towns like Biograd. City trips with a difference ...
The “Wings For Life World Run” usually
takes place in early May and so the heat is limited, but you should still expect sunshine and approximately 26 degrees. You can find out more at www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com
A little more unusual is the
“Ston Wall Marathon”, which also includes the city walls of Ston - the
longest fortress wall in Europe. That means several hundred steps up and down. With sunshine and otherwise pleasant September heat, this is a
special challenge when running.
The route alone with its unforgettable views of the city and the
salt works, surrounded by nature and old buildings, along the salt flats and through the hinterland, past the beautiful Prapratno bay with its sandy beach is
unique. Add to that the
scent of pine forests, a sea breeze and the smell of salt ... is there a nicer place to run than this? No matter if you are a beginner or a professional runner ... choose between 4, 15 or 42km and enjoy the runner's high in one of the most beautiful places in Dalmatia.
A bonus of this marathon is its close proximity to good food and wine.
Treat yourself to a reward after the run and visit one of the numerous fish restaurants in
Ston or Mali Ston with dishes that come straight from the sea and are freshly prepared.
This run also supports the
Zero Waste Blue project, an environmental initiative by the EU in cooperation with Italy and Croatia. Find out more at www.ston-wall-marathon.com
